Warcraft: The Life Suck

I keep reading how Warcraft ruins people, marriages, jobs etc. Personally Im not buying it. My guess is if these people were not playing Warcraft they would be doing something else that is just as ridiculous (perhaps watching Nip Tuck). The fantasy of a life that is in endless persuit of learning new things, improving yourself, using your time wisely is just that, a fantasy. Most of us would rather just relax infront of the tube or have fun killing virtual shit after work. I see no social decline in pastimes. Face it, anything done to excess will ruin you. From beating off to blow. To blame a game for a life wasted is like blaming the fabric that the Columbine black trench coats were made out of for the high school shootings. Scapegoats are convenient if anything.

Here's a classic Warcraft related post(Link) about why this person has been lax in updating a blog.

Some of the comments on there are pretty funny. "My friend is seriously addicted to WoW and has even spent 80 hours with one character!" So what? I spent over 40 hours playing friggin' Lego Star Wars II. Was it a waste of my time? Probably. But it's not like I was going to develop a cure for cancer in those 40 hours anyway.

I used to spend 10 to 18 hours a day smoking pot and playing Diablo 2....I think I was the happiest in those days.

I can speak from personal experience that before I bought World of Warcraft I was more involved in the weblogging scene, wrote more stuff in my area, produced more out of world creative stuff and that all of this plummetted, along with reading books, when I bought and started playing the game.

Now obviously, not everyone does creative stuff outside work or after school, or reads a whole bunch of books or whatever. And if you enjoy playing World of Warcraft no one is saying you shouldn't do it. But the thing some people have picked up on is that they are finding the game startlingly addictive and time consuming to the extent that they start to dislike playing it, observe the problems that their continual play is causing but still feel compelled to play it. Their point is, I suppose, not that they feel guilty for enjoying playing World of Warcraft but that they feel like they're no longer enjoying it and yet find it really hard not to play.

You can laugh at that if you want, and it may deserve mockery, but if it's true—if it isn't just people being weak willed—then surely you can understand why people would feel that's a problem?
