The Uber List
(From Boing Boing)
"The Office of Foreign Asset Control's list of "specially designated nationals" is a list of people who might be terrorists. Or might have the same names as terrorists. Or might sound like the same name as a terrorist. Or might sound like a name that a terrorist might make up, but hasn't."
Basically your fucked if your on this list. So the next question is how did these people get on this list, and do we trust this process?
Here's the list

Any list is better than no list at all. And being fucked is way better than being blown up...Sir.
They all come here to work?

Gee, silly me. I'm thinking the USA could be both un-fucked and not blown up at at the very same time.
Im wondering if your one of those who feel that forfeiting "some" of your civil liberties for "security" is a fair trade?
This is the old Bush fan boy argument that inevitably supports more government surveillance (Patriot Act etc) IE: "If you have done nothing wrong they wont come for you"
But what happens to the person who has done nothing wrong, but they still come for him?
But that never happens does it?
And per your rather puzzling link to the Drunk Driving incident: are you saying the USA would be better off if all illegals living in our country simply went home?
Well right now we have to be fucked. Because we are at war. War is fucked. Wether we declare it or not, people declare it onto us.
Sure, I can suspend my civil liberties until higher priorites are served. I believe 'survival' is a more important priority to this civilization. So it trumps gay rights or political correctness.
You asked if we can trust this process.
History shows that during wartime many sacrifices are made by both enlisted and civilians. What makes the USA great is we are dynamic enough to "break down the structure." We can make these wartime sacrifices then celebrate when we discard them. When shit needs to change, we change it. Right now we need to look up everyones ass, because we slept on the job for about 40 years.
And this is no Bush fan'attic' boy argument. I asked if they all come here to work. Bush says they do.
The person who has done no wrong still suffers and dies. Thats life, a struggle. To breathe, to laugh, to sing and if your circiut is bent just right you get to pursue happiness.
My link simply showed that until we get a grip on our environment we should have several lists. Do you want to be killed by a drunken driver? and then we find out. if we would have had a list, this fucker who killed you wouldn't even have been in your environment. wether its an 'anti wal-mart' list or a 'dont eat the pet food' list or a 'The 420 Party' list.
I too am thinkning the USA can be both Un-fucked and not blown up. We have a dream.
Ok..
"Sure, I can suspend my civil liberties until higher priorities are served. I believe 'survival' is a more important priority to this civilization. So it trumps gay rights or political correctness."
I maintain that this stance (which, like it or not, has been reenforced by the Bush administration and countless followers) places far too much trust in the people who establish these "Higher Priorities" . Personally I am unwilling to forfeit any of my civil liberties in the name of an abstract security. I would suggest that this word (and many others, freedom, evil doers, good) is being used to serve other agendas.
You seem fond of evoking history to prove your point, well I'd like to point out that history has clearly shown that those who "temporally" suspend their freedoms rarely, if ever, get them back.
The FBI was recently shown to be abusing the Patriot Act. Is this abuse acceptable to you? Do you think they will stop? Really?

Im not sure what national security has to do with gay rights issues or political correctness.
"Well right now we have to be fucked. Because we are at war."
Have we declared war? Really? Please answer what sovereign country are we fighting?
From my perspective, what the Bush administration and the Necons ( this is clearly stated in their project for a New American Century) have done is declare "war" against a meme. An idea. That is all. We did it before, with disastrous results, in Vietnam when we declared "war" against the spread of Communism and we are simply now in the midst of a rinse/repeat cycle.
To what end?
If you will allow me to digress. If you want to target a real fucking enemy of modern man you will target the kind of thought that allowed those fuck wads to fly planes into buildings. Bush calls it terrorism. I call it religion
Please check out Sam Harris's "The End of Faith" and let me know what you think.....
"The person who has done no wrong still suffers and dies. Thats life, a struggle. To breathe, to laugh, to sing and if your circuit is bent just right you get to pursue happiness."
Yeah? Tell that to these fucking guys:

This is what unquestioning trust of your government will get you.
And your quote seems like a pretty convenient and even flippant philosophical stance to take. Sorry pal, you may be comfortable knowing people are getting unjustly fucked because their "circuits are not bent correctly" but it sounds like your just looking for a easy out. Some would call it a justification. I call it something else: chicken shit.

Sorry. You are confusing two issues. Just to clarify I am talking about uncovering and examining the system by which the government develops a list of suspected terrorists etc.
This other issue concerns illegal immigration and it's fall out, which, I may add, is both good and bad.
None the less, I find your faith/comfort in these "lists" to be odd.
Don't you know that a list is only as good as the person who writes it?
Or how about I put it this way:
The number of votes you have is important, but what is equally important is who's counting them.
Get it?
