MIA: Bird Flu
Ok, I have to admit I really don't like hip hop. I think it's a genre that's been eating itself for many years. For the most part It's obvious and route.
Having said that, the new stuff from MIA is worth a listen. This song called "Bird Flu" sounds like Fela through a 8 bit Nintendo system and it features chicken samples.

good stuff! i think your cavalier generalizations about hip-hop are a bit inane though... name me a genre of music that hasn't been eating itself for years? art eats itself. everything eats everything else. that's just reality. obviously there is a lot of terrible hip-hop out there but there are also some great gems lurking in the muck... you just need to search around a bit. check out holy fuck, or dalek, or live human, or dj spooky, or mike ladd, or aesop rock, or mc rove...
True. It's difficult or (even unfair) to criticize a whole genre of music, and I freely admit that I'm not exceedingly well versed in current Hip Hop trends, artists etc. And I do understand that every genre of music always has stand out artists who help define what the genre could be, these areas are always where the interesting stuff is happening. Hip Hop is certainly not unique in this way.
I still maintain that in recent years the form seems to be mired in imitation and regurgitation. Like all popular music there comes a point where the musical styles tends to implode from lack of innovation. I think Hip Hop, on the whole, has reached this stage. I lament it actually. One of the things I loved about almost all Hip Hop was that it was so "weird" and at times even experimental.
Few things to note:
Perhaps I'm addressing the most popular (and American..I tend to like what the Brits are doing more) form of the music?
I have the same issues with most Jazz.
I'm a total asshole.
File under personal opinion. But I will check out your recommendations (many of which I've heard). Thanks for those.
