Radiohead Rant
I, for one, am happy that I didn't pay one cent for the new Radiohead album, as I think it's pretty much a hunk of garbage, or lets just say I'm disappointed ("All I Need" is a wonderful song though).
Here's a rant about the distribution of the albumn:

i agree with you young man. i think the new record is stinky. maybe it will grow on me. it's just boring . i forget it's on. i can't remember anything about it after it's played. they have to have better songs somewhere in them now don't they? i'm going to listen to it right now & see what happens while i wait for the a/c service man to arrive. oh yeah, i roll like piddy baby. word.
Yep Yep Yep.
I do know that some of the songs on the "extended" album that costs 80 friggin bucks are good (Bangers and Mash), at least I remember liking them live.
So we'll wait and see.
funny thing here. my girlfriend just got back from the gym, as i said i was playing the radiohead. she walks in & says "i love this cd. i listen to it all the time". go figure. i must confess i did throw down for the vinyl too. big giant homo that i am. lets hope for the best.......... off to Dj for the white man. i often close a show with " self replicating machine elves." always a nice finishing touch. i caught my 8 year old walking round the house singing "your time to lose" the other day. wacky.
I'm actually really digging this album, although I do resonate with the complaints about the "bonus tracks." (I'll just download those illegally when they come out though so I'm not really all that indignant). Definitely not the radical face-melter that Kid A was on first listen. Took 2 or 3 listens to sink in but I think In Rainbows may actually be some of Radiohead's best songwriting. Really nice guitar work throughout and I think it sounds great despite the lossy format.
Yeah...Maybe I just need to listen more? I've heard the whole thing over 10 times now and I still am finding it boring/lazy. The Drums are annoying the fuck out of me.
Also, I'm first to admit that my expectations may be too high for these guys. I really adore this band.
And I have no problems with them charging for the physical product with extra tracks etc. I think it may be a tad expensive, but that's subjective. This "is" a business model, not just mere marketing.
And as far as audio quality (FLAC etc), I could give a fuck about that stuff. Radiohead albums have always sounded pretty bad to me anyway, so I'm not convinced the MP3 compression is coloring my experience very much.
Well, I wont push it. Opinions are like assholes yes?
That's cool your digging it Brian!
>>Opinions are like assholes yes?
Indeed!
What do I know? I thought you guys sounded great at BOTH last week...
I'm a bit perplexed by your comments though.
You say:
>>[M]y expectations may be too high for these guys. I really adore this band.
and:
>>Radiohead albums have always sounded pretty bad to me anyway.
These statements seem to be at odds. If their albums have always sounded bad to you, why would you have excessively high expectations for their new album?
Are you saying that you expect poor production from Radiohead albums, but that the songwriting on In Rainbows is not up to snuff?
If so, I'm baffled on both points, but to each his own...
Cheers,
Brian
Wow, I really must listen to this album then. I lost interest in radiohead after the Hail To The Shit album. I thought it was pretty lame from a band that just did kid a and amnesiac. But who knows, maybe this is ok. I really don't expect nothing from those guys, I can live with Kid A and Amnesiac and the memories when I first saw "paranoid android" musicvideo and cried. That's gay I know, but it's my little gay memory.
What did you guys think about the Thom Yorke soloalbum? I thought it was good. Not great, but good.
OK Brian...Clarification:
"Are you saying that you expect poor production from Radiohead albums, but that the songwriting on In Rainbows is not up to snuff?"
Pretty much. Yes.
I'm not really a fan of how Radiohead "sound" on record as I think their recordings (IE Engineering) are not so interesting, kinda hollow and lack power. The only exception for me is "The Bends" which sounds good to my ears.
That being said, the sound of the their albums has never tempered my love for the band as song writers and performers. First and latest albums aside, they remain one of my all time faves.
My expectations are high on the song writing front. They have yet to let me down until "Rainbows".
I adore many artists whos
recordings I cant stand the sound of (Nick Cave, Magnetic Fields, some of Tom Waits stuff, some of Rufus Wainwright stuff..to name a few). I'm always listening for the song over, say, the sound of the bass guitar.
This works in reverse as well. Lenny Kravitz comes to mind. Man I dislike his music, but his first album sounds soooo cool.
Ok!
