Album Diary: v4
Back to West Grand. We did a quick rough mix and added a little EQ to various instruments, then we reduced the song to it's rhythmic elements and added each instrument back in until we nailed basic arrangements for each section. So far one of the good things about this song is it's mixing itself. This is a good sign as when a song doesn't mix itself as it usually means you've fucked it up.We then added a Glockenspiel part to the verses via Reason.
Next we plugged in the Mini-Moog and added some "noise" elements followed with more noise made by the Joystick synth. The joystick is a primitive synth who's oscillators are controlled via the joystick, it's capable of very wild sounds, some of which we put on tape.
The song is done! We now will let it rest and not mess with it until the whole album is tracked, this way we come in fresh for the mix. Chances are we will still add a few instruments when we do the final mix..

How many songs are you plannin to record? That joystick noise machine sounds pretty cool.
I'm not sure..he have lots of em. We are trying to figure out if we record a bunch of EP's or just a new album (12 songs or so). I'm guessing once we get to 7 songs or so we will figure it out.
We'll make a vid of the joystick for you.
If the new album has any of those unreleased songs from your Bottom of the Hill show (especially "Secret Life")I would glady pay out the ass to obtain a copy. Even though it's free. That's how much I have been longing a new MBO album.
oh Joy!
Thanks Shane!
Yeah we will be recording "My Secret Life Is Killing Me" and "I'm Your Ringtone". Both new tunes played at Bottom of the Hill.
And heck you don't even have to pay out of the ass for em! Buy yourself a pretty ribbon instead!
