Spent Poet History

I often get emails requesting that I post the second unreleased "Spent Poets" album "Steve". If you don't know, the Spent Poets was a band that I fronted back in the 90's. We did a few albums for Geffen and then were dropped, we disbanded soon after. The album was made at Coast Recorders (when Dan Alexander owned he joint) and was engineered/produced by David Bianco. A few of the tracks were also recorded in Matt Winegar's bedroom (Matt did all the recording and played many of the instruments on all of the poets stuff) on a charmed Tascam 388. For this album the band consisted of myself, Matt and Derek Greenberg. We had fun making this music.

Matt went on to record an album with his band "Slider" and is now producing other acts, and Derek has been keeping himself busy working on his own project "Beanpole" and chasing the elusive Ringo snare sound. I'm gonna ask Derek if it's OK that I post a few Beanpole songs here. They are very powerful.

Here's a few songs from "Steve"...

Thanks!

Pink Elephant is absolutely the best of these songs.

Kinda reminds me of blur, the cure, the beatles, r.e.m and kate bush.

Crazy!

Steve: The Spent Poets on steroids?

These MP3's sound so much better then the copy of Steve I recently came into possession of. (I can only hope your current take on the music business allows me to have it )
It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's growing on me. But I just love the complexity of the songs and it must be said: best with headphones on... For so many years I have been trying to get more info/music from the Spent Poets and never succeeded. You guys were so illusive. I must say I fell in love with your first album and now I can fall in love all over again. Just like I did when I discovered MBO's site a few moths ago. It all makes me want to buy a ticket to the states for 31st Dec.

Shakki can pick me up on the way there, I'm from The Netherlands.

Leaves me to say: Oh' hail the great Internet! And people willing to gather/share information and other stuff...

Hi Howard

If you email me your address I'd be happy to send you a link with all the Steve tracks. I think I have some B-Sides somewhere as well..

I'm glad you liked the first album, Steve is a tad different it's true.

Oh and I also enjoy the experience of headphones. It's one of the great things about iPods, as one is forced into an intimate relationship with the music.

Cheers

howard, I've started to raise money for the airline tickets, I got 1 euro! Maybe two on december. It looks bad, I know. We can pull this together, if we work as a team! Let's unite the european MBO fan club. The two of us. Think about the possibilities man! Oh god, sorry... I'm drunk. Ok 12 hours of work and after that 5 to 6 hours of drinkin beer. I'm truly a bassplayer.

But how about it howard? The European MBO Fun Club? We can make t-shirts and all kinds of weird shit!

Shakki,
Between you and me that makes 2 1/2 Euro. Would you not rather buy another beer for that ;-)
For the rest of our magical mystery tour: I can only offer you the back seat of my motorbike...But at least you should be comfortable with the cold.

The European MBO Fun Club sounds great. It just had a 100% membership increase!
But if we continue saving money like this, it might have to become some Platonic Groupie Club that can never get to know their object of contemplation.

Ah well, you could be off worse.

ya know. thinkin bout those poets. here's a lil' story for ya all. way back when. the first lp was out. 1990? something like that. early 90's. whatever. i flew to san diego from phoenix to see the spent poets play,i was pals with the drummer. they were opening for the band wire train. well so they are the first band on the bill. i forget who the other band was. not important. ....................so anyhow the poets come on stage to a crowd of indifferent rock fans. no one knew who they were being it was their first tour record etc. well everyone in the crowd was talking ignoring the stage. adam walks up to the mike & says. were's the spent poets & this is mr. enstein. they ripped into that first number, & from that point on EVERYONE, & i mean EVERYONE in the club, a crowd of between 500-700 people didn't take their eyes off the stage for the entire set. they freekin rocked. they also played a song called the black pope, that if adam is feeling nice he'll post for all of you. it was another highlight from that show & it ended up on "steve". it was an amazing show. one of the best i have ever seen by any band & im a guy that has seen everyone from the osmonds & mac davis to rick wakeman & nugent. lots of shows. the poets were such a great live band. it was a shame when it all blew up, i think on that same tour later on down the road. i could be wrong about that. i always have though that they could have been huge if geffen had stuck with them. a bit ahead of their time them boys were. i think the songs from both records stand up today as they did way back when. i have a burned cd of "steve" that was used to check out how it sounded in matt's car during the recording. it also has a black & white mock up of what was to become the cover. pretty cool item for a poets fan. he'll down play this, but adam is a talent. a gifted song writer & artist. he was also a pretty hip "rock god" in his bobby brady pants. i don't think that adam is one to live in the past, but he did make some great music with that band. if you listen to what MBO is now you can see from where it comes. good stuff. ok bye.

I had always known that the Poets existed, but with this being my first taste, I must say that I am impressed. I'll have to seek out their first album somtime after the holidays when I'll have money again.

Cool story shepula.

Gee Dan..thanks. I'm now engorged with blood.

The headlining band was "Live" and that was our first (and last) tour. I seem to recall it went pretty good until the drummer and guitarist became engaged in a shoving match on stage in front of 2000 people or so. That might have been a red flag? Warning sign? Heh...

But your right about the past though. Nothing sadder than a musician re-living his or her history in their own minds. Icky.

Dan didn't Eno once try to strangle you because you asked him "When you gonna sing again?" Classic!

But I'm glad the music we made has had some sort of impact on various people. That makes for a good feelings...

MBO feels like the old Poets sessions once did..which for me is a very, very good thing.

Fun!

funny how i remember your pant's but not the headlining band............that's right. "live".

why the hell did i think it was wire train? weird.....

yes eno did indeed put me in a head lock for asking " when are you going to do another pop record".
and i never washed my neck again.

that same night i saw randy newman's penis....

man them was the days.....

funny thing.. 20 years later eno made "another day on earth".........

and until someone proves otherwise, i'll continue to think he made that record just for me.

batting eye lip coyly.

Awww, Pink Elephant makes me all nostalgic! I used to use that as my handle on the Primus and MIRV boards! Someone sent me a copy of Steve years ago and I loved it...wish I could remember who! Now I'm going to put it in my CD rotation. Thanks for posting it!!

Oboy! This is really nice...

A friend told me the Poets existed, and I scoured the net for some tracks... to no avail, apart from these ones.

Is there any way to actually get some more? Perhaps a full album? They're hard to come by in South America, you know...

Anyways, this rocks. Thanks for sharing :3
