Diana Camera

Lomo recently released the Diana, a Chinese cheap-o camera that does all sorts of cool stuff. It looks swa-heeeat. Now I can make more alt.saturated.blurry pics while wearing an aged irreverent tight t-shirt that's made to look like it's from the 70's. Killer!

"You're An Asshole"

My favorite Zen Buddhist Priest/Punk Rocker Brad Warner has an interesting Rant over at the Suicide Girl site (a place that I profoundly Loathe actually, but that's my issue)..Sure it's a tad reactionary, but I like his point.

"Look. You’re an asshole. Seriously. A complete asshole. You have no idea what you are or what you’re supposed to be doing. Yet you run around all of creation like it’s some cheap-ass toy Santa gave you that you’re now gonna break and then cry until Santa gives you another one. Cuz there are a million of them all lined up on shelves at the store. Hooting and hollering your ugly head off at three in the morning and waking all the people on the street. Turning your moronic music up as loud as it can go to show the world who you really are. Racing your Harley down Sunset Boulevard at full speed. Dreaming of enlightenment you can buy in a box from some windbag Zen Master and leave in your car while you go out and buy something else. Hanging out at tawdry meditation seminars hoping some genius guru will show you The Light, paying him good money for garbage fantasies. You’re fucking useless. Totally fucking useless. The universe is yours and all you want to do with it is write your name in spray paint on the wall. You’re like a dog pissing on a fence. No one who sees the mark you left on the world could give a shit."

Fantastic Planet

Remember those childhood memories that helped inform who you are now? Well here's a major one for me. I watched "Fantastic Planet" by Rene Laloux hundreds of times when I was a wee lad and I'm still fascinated/in love with it. These amazing and strange images from this French animated feature are meshed with my sub-conscience in so many ways.

I am so happy to see that the 35th anniversary edition is being released in Oct with obligatory documentaries and Laloux's short "The Snail", which is also super cool.

9/11 Boogymen

Douglas Rushkoff is one of the best minds floating around today. He nails the 9/11 culture in his latest blog posting:

"Yes, I believe that 9-11 theorizing debilitates the counterculture. It robs us of some potentially creative thinkers. It replaces truly important questions with trivial ones. It marginalizes more constructive investigation of American participation in the development of Al Qaeda as well as its subsequent aggravation. And perhaps worst of all, it is precisely the sort of activity that government disinformation specialists would want us to be involved with."

Restore Habeas Corpus

"We all want to make America safe from terrorism, but becoming a nation that sanctions the unlawful detention of its own residents -- detaining and jailing them without the chance to appear before a judge -- does not make us safe. Instead, it violates a value that we have held dear for centuries -- safeguarding our individual freedom before arbitrary state action.

Please sign-on below as a citizen co-sponsor to the bipartisan Leahy-Specter-Dodd Habeas Corpus Restoration Act. "

Blackwater Booted?

Wow. This is a sure sign that the Bush Administration is truly falling apart. This Christian led army for hire were one of the more replant aspects of the Iraq war, and now it looks like they are loosing their substantial Iraq contract. I guess the Iraq people have grown tired of being bullied by mercenaries who could not be prosecuted, no matter how horrible the crime? About fucking time.

KAOSSILATOR Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer

This is the latest from Korg. 100 sounds, controlled by the x-y pad from a Kaoss Pad. Left-right controls pitch, according to one of 31 scales. Up-down controls anything else - cutoff frequency, modulation etc. It looks like it plays all kinds of arpeggios while locked to MIDI clock. Cool.

Election 08 Mashup (Dems)

This forum is actually a wonderful thing and I'd hope that all contenders in the 08 race would subscribe to it.

Personally I adore how most of these professional politicians shovel the bullshit. I found Obama's dodging of Bill Maher's religious question telling and Clinton's creditability issues came to light rather quickly.

I do think Kucinich handled most of the questions well.

Cant We All Just Get Along?

This is cool! (Via Boing Boing)

"Scientists report that the massive 200-yard spider web recently discovered in Texas's Lake Tawakoni State Park was woven by spiders from many different species working collaboratively. Thousands of spiders have rebuilt the web three times after it's been torn up by rain and wind. Texas A&M University entomologist Allen Dean has identified spiders from such families as funnel web weavers, sac spiders, orb weavers, mesh web weavers, wolf spiders, pirate spiders, and others working on the web."

"The Reality of Islam"

I'm a Sam Harris fan boy. I admit it. While this dynamic is not a good thing (as being a fan of anything can tend to cloud your critical engines) I rarely read an author who I so absolutely agree with, in both content and execution.

So, this being 9/11, I figure a link to an Harris article concerning the dangers of the Islamic faith is beyond appropriate.

Here's a taste:

"The idea that Islam is a “peaceful religion hijacked by extremists” is a dangerous fantasy—and it is now a particularly dangerous fantasy for Muslims to indulge. It is not at all clear how we should proceed in our dialogue with the Muslim world, but deluding ourselves with euphemisms is not the answer. It now appears to be a truism in foreign policy circles that real reform in the Muslim world cannot be imposed from the outside. But it is important to recognize why this is so—it is so because the Muslim world is utterly deranged by its religious tribalism. In confronting the religious literalism and ignorance of the Muslim world, we must appreciate how terrifyingly isolated Muslims have become in intellectual terms. The problem is especially acute in the Arab world. Consider: According to the United Nations’ Arab Human Development Reports, less than 2% of Arabs have access to the Internet. Arabs represent 5% of the world’s population and yet produce only 1% of the world’s books, most of them religious. In fact, Spain translates more books into Spanish each year than the entire Arab world has translated into Arabic since the ninth century."

and the whole article here:

Ok,enough of far and away. The link below is the last of the shots that I will post as this is really not "my" blog etc. I don't want a blog outside of MBO as I really have nothing to say at all to anyone.

So, if your so inclined, here are a few more pics of gold cities, general decay and here and now beauty.

FYI.

1. The Tuk Tuk driver can use the 4th dimension so he is seemingly going forward and backwards at the same time.

2. Some Thai street food vendors sell a form of Pad Thai called "KILL THE PASTY WESTERN MAN WITH SOUL COLLAPSING HEAT RAY NOODLES". Best avoided.

4. People sell and eat fish heads in front of high end Prada Malls all the time!

5. Tropical fish love Pringles.

6. The famous Thai phrase "Same, but different" really starts to make sense after repeated usage. Recommended for every situation that can be imagined.
