Recording Diary v26

Here's a few sessions compacted into one post:

TUESDAY: We started the evening recording Ebow overdubs for the song Catch. I used my Les Paul Standard and Craig's Bass Ebow, which is cool because it has a octave setting, which gives it a nice high overtone. (An Ebow is a device that is held over a single string on a guitar that provides infinite sustain of a note)

Figuring out the single line harmonies turned out to be the most difficult part of the evening, this took a few hours. Once the parts were crafted I played them all through my Pod Live using a fuzz setting with some added delay.

Then we went home.

FRIDAY night we played around with some bass tones for "Solomon Grundy", trying my Blackface Fender Twin using Craig's hollow body Jerry Jones bass. The tone was unique but lacked low end. So we decided to try what has given us luck before and ran his bass via Direct Injection. This result yielded a cool "rubbery" tone that we both loved. Craig experimented playing with a pick vs fingers and ultimately decided on fingers.

After a few hours of fine tuning his parts Craig played the song.

Then we went home.

SATURDAY was spent on rhythm guitar for "Solomon". I ran my Les Paul through the "11" guitar modeler, which is really really nice piece of software. Recommended. We settled on a "tweed amp" setting that was overdriven. After changing strings and tuning I played the rhythm guitar part on the first take, because I'm a total pro.

I then played a guitar solo into the second verse of the song. We got a clean Fender Amp sound and I used the Gibson SG. This took about a hour and we were all happy with the solo, particularly because the electronics of the SG started shorting out (in time!)..creating a happy glitchy mistake. This is my first MBO solo and now I want to do more. Mirv, your fired.

We also set up a mic for Jeff to play a shaker through most of the song. Took about 1/2 hour.

Craig and Jeffs buddy (and epic drummer) Gene Hogland stopped by. This was my first time meeting Gene. He's a very nice fellow and absolutely the best metal drummer on Earth.

Then I went home and passed out in the hot tub.

No more recording this next week, as we have a show on Thursday and need to rehearse.

PLEASE tell me the show is going to be recorded. I keep a boot of your last Bottom of the Hill show in my car at all times, and I'm sure this one will be just as good.

Also, do you guys sell T-shirts or anything at your shows?

Hi Shane!

Well..we are not planning on recording it, or maybe we are? I don't know.

I am really glad that you find enjoyment from listening to the live stuff, and thank you for your support..

Although I must say I'm conflicted about the whole "taper" thing.

A part of me wants to control the quality of the MBO "product", I.E give the fans good board tapes that we edit..(for both sound and performance)

And another is fine with people hearing the raw truth of a particular live show, warts and all. Hey if we suck then that's our fault for not rehearsing enough (a version of the song Ambian that's floating around is a painful reminder of our lack of rehearsal for that song). But fuck it right?

So..long and short of it, we are in the middle of recording our next album, so we are not making any official live release plans, as we just don't have the time or inclination.

Usually someone is taping, and they post somewhere right? I honestly don't know where. Our pal Lundog may be able to help you out?

I'm thinking we need (or it might be fun to have) a MBO Bulletin board for this reason...Something I'm currently looking into.

As far as bootlegs etc, I'm just looking the other way. This is the sad result of being a control freak when it comes to music that I have an active role in creating, but who am I to tell people what to do. If it gives you joy then go for it..

T-Shirts. yeah their has been talk..we need to do it. None for this next show sadly. When we do have em rest assured we will sell em on the site.

Ok..thanks!

Adam

^^^I can't spell.

Well, I haven't noticed any "warts" from live songs, but who knows- you and I hear your music much differently, I'm sure. I don't know how to come upon them actually, someone emailed me out of the blue asking if I'd like a copy once, so that's how I obtained it.

I'd wear a crude sharpie-made MBO shirt to a show if need be, but with me being in MN that doesn't seem like too likely of a situation.

yah! Give us a message board where we share trade secrets, government conspiracies and sell MBO bootlegs on ebay. That would rule.

I have no idea if anyone is taping the show on thursday. Hopefully someone will... not just for MBO alone, but to hear Tim's new band - and to hear House ripping it up with Kehoe as well. Should be a wacky, booze-fueled evening.

ok, adam - start looking the other way...... Now.

hey, shane (and any other mbo fans reading this)
I just put up a boot of mbo on nye at the fillmore.
You can grab it Here
